Truly inspiring Design | That Bird Label

That Bird label new collection | LovewhatyoufoundjG1JfA4Ku10ryaaEKNCTQ4Q

Many of you may have heard of Birdsnest.com.au, a huge online retailer known for offering inspiring wardrobe solutions for Australian women. This inspiration has evolved into the launch of Birdnest’s first In house label,  That Bird Label.  Yesterday I attended a launch event here in Sydney and was blown away at the stunning designs.  The range really does cater for different body shapes and sizes and I love a story where it is apparent that the brand actually listens to what customers want!  In this case it was a call out for “affordable styles that lifted the spirits while answering body image concerns “,  founder Jane Cay explains.   I was so impressed with the collection and thrilled to discover I actually know Jane, having worked with her when she was an intern while at uni!  I remember thinking, wow this girl is going to go a long way -  I was right!  ( I knew all Birdsnest’s founder Jane yet I didn’t recognise her under a married name – love this small world stuff, don’t you! )

I also loved meeting her committed team of buyer and designers, such amazing girls. Jane runs a very unique company where her team and her customer really do matter, I mean truly matter, in fact Jane and her team just won best customer experience in the Online Retailer awards.   Well done on a fabulous range.

Now the hard job -  to choose my order from my fave picks below !

Enjoy,

Nic x

Styled to death and the rebirth of photography

One thing I’ve been really frustrated with over the last few years is seeing so many amazing homes in magazines and blogs which look incredible – sleek lines, architectural finishes, neutral colour pallets, yet I wonder who actually lives there.  I can’t see any signs of real life. Do you ever wonder where all the photographs went ?

Personally I love going into houses and seeing photos everywhere – the documentation of life, of change, of place, of people; moments in time captured, printed, displayed, remembered. It’s a little permanence in an ever-changing world.  To say I’m a big fan of photography is a little bit of an understatement. The two ways I recommend using photography in  homes are:

1. Scattered around everywhere.  I make a point to update my kids professional pics regularly so I don’t miss those key stages that you can never get back.  I love a mix of photos and other pieces of framed art, giving so much personality to your walls.

2. Consider a large format print as a stand-alone piece of art.  No need to spend thousands on an original artwork to give a room an amazing lift.  You don’t have to have the life size full frontal of yourself,  but there might be a place that is special to you , or a shot of you family or pet  in your favourite space or even a dramatic location that becomes the artwork itself.

Some good friends of mine just had some photos done, as they are leaving Sydney and wanted photos to hang in their new home overseas. I loved the way the photographers, Milk & Honey captured both the essence of the family, and the beauty of the Harbour and foreshore.

Ikea Docksta table

How can I organise my kids craft more efficiently?  is a commonly asked question, so I hope this post gives you some tips.  Maybe you have a craft/art space for yourself and/or your kids, maybe it’s a table, cupboard or whole room or both. What ever your space, you probably feel the same as I do about all things craft, that is you love doing it and seeing the kids having so much fun, but it all gets too much sometimes and stuff just seems so out of control when glitter footprints appear all over the house and you constantly ask yourself  “will this stuff ever be tidy ?”   The answer is probably when one of the following occur :

1. your kids move out of home,   2. when YOU and only you tidy it for guests or  3. when you take a few minutes every few days to sort it once you have it organised everything into it’s own “home”.  Here is a quick and simple process for organising craft rooms/spaces: Continue Reading →

ikea storage solutions

A client asked about value storage solutions for her new home – a common questions. Most of us can’t afford a custom built unit for every storeage need – so we turn to the Ikea expedit range…ring a bell ?  This is probably the highest selling Ikea item ever.

I can not tell you how many of these I have bought over the years and made my husband build. (maybe I did a few !) For goodness sakes, I even have one in the bathroom.  It’s one of those items that never gets moved as we move, if we move house, but simply ebay’d off and purchased time and time over partly because they are so easy and partly because I am always changing things around !

I know it’s not just me  – Look at sites such as Design*Sponge see how many home use the Expedit! Ikea may not be the most amazing high end design company but boy they got it totally right with this design.  So many of the sneak peak posts at Design*Sponge include an Expedit somewhere .

Sally Campbell Textiles

Celebrating kid designed & made art | & a little seth godin wisdom

Each time we go out  for a walk my kids seem to find something to take home to the craft room. One wet and dreary day last week a wet and dirty brown things appeared in my daughters hand, mousey, she called him – back home mousey took some form and is now a fully fledged part of our family – he even has a house now made from a tomato box.  I admit sometimes I want to say to the kids “please leave it” …but if I did,  then we wouldn’t have Mr mousey -  and of course I need to remember that things of no interest to me, will be the thing a kid will enjoy for hours and hours. Easy kids craft ideas | Karma beads

Easy, colourful, inexpensive and long lived craft = peg board beading

Otherwise known in our house as Karma beading.  As I am not quite sure of the origins of this name, one of the kids made this up.  It probably has something to do with a mispronunciation of a  bead brand name ” harma beads”  or the fact that it does “calm” the kids down – as they sit for hours to create these masterpieces.    I think the final product looks great ( if you don’t melt it while you iron it – oops,  remember the baking paper over it first ).  Continue Reading →

Co-working spaces USA | Makeshift Society

235 Gough Street, San Fransisco

A few years ago while researching office mood boards i re discovered the very cool concept of shared work spaces. Originating mostly for the tech fields in an ever growing sector of  freelancers, it made sense to start these communal work spaces for those who couldn’t get picked up by an incubator. Next came companies such as Weld based in Dallas, who were one of the first to invite creatives such as photographers and designers to join their facility.

At this point I would like to say this is not really all that of a new idea (ahem!), we have all been doing it for ages, now there is a fabulous new edge. When I say doing it for ages, I refer to university study groups or in my case this cool idea was one that a friend and I had way back in the days as wee 13 year olds. We decided working together was way more fun and so we decided to start the Homework club. Participants were to do homework/share ideas/bring food and offer their homes on roster system.  It actually worked and homework was completed on time ! – perhaps it was something to do with the strange ceremonious centre piece made from dry ice – weird I know,  but that’s just what we did back then at every meeting.  Fast forward to 2013  and we have so many amazing initiatives across the globe ( i do regret not starting one here yet- it is a dream project I hope to realise soon)

Let me introduce to you the  Makeshift Society Continue Reading →

Does Anyone have white kid bunks ? well then you know what a pain they are right?. Of course they look great and space efficient but really are quite a pain in the rear .  I was on the lookout for a good quilt that I could tuck in to the sides and make the bed as easily as I can make beds with my pottery barn quilts and  I found a great solution and for $30  ! what a bargain .  Continue Reading →

Back to school in style

Marimekko  66 King st, Sydney

This week’s challenge was to find something unique for my daughter new school bag. Most kids like to differentiate their bag with a key ring or similar item hanging off their bag.  We struck gold while in Sydney’s Marimekko store this week by finding a bracelet on sale which we decided to use as a bag tie.  It looks super sweet and “very stylish”, as my daughter said.   For $15 she was happy and I so was I having another chance to peruse all the fabulous fabrics and taking advantage of the February sale. Easy Kids craft ideas| modeling clay

Need some  more easy kids craft ideas to do today ?  Ok guys for $3 only – this is good one.   Rainy days, long weekends, holidays, anytime really you will be surprised how fun this is.  Our 3 year old could easily use this modelling clay without mess everywhere.  I promise it is fine on a plastic table cloth or place mat and wipes clean, personally I think it is less messier than play doh.  Any local craft store or a $2 store will stock this – we got ours at K-Mart.  After you use it keep any leftovers in a container or zip lock bag and it doesn’t dry out at all. Moon River Chattel | Kikkerland Zecar

62 Grand St Brooklyn, NY

For a store with a stellar reputation of rustic home wares and amazing vintage pieces, I was very happy to find some cool toy products to take home as gifts, such as this Zecar by Kikkerland, given it was going to be very tricky to take that awesome basin I spotted.  The thing with seeing all these stores while on an inspirational trip is that there are so many things we want to take home on a plane but just can’t.  It didn’t stop me from popping my head into the other section of the store across the road filled with Antique and retro pieces.  Just ask the staff for the key to have a sticky beak. West Elm how I love thee

112 W 18th St, New York | 1870 Broadway, New York

update :  The sydney store will be opening in May instead of originally posted early 2013.

17 years ago when my sister moved the USA I was thrilled because I had a direct link to my favourite stores Pottery Barn, West Elm and William Sonoma.  No more dangerously heavy bags  ( well actually this didn’t stop – it never will) , instead she could be my mule on her return trips to Sydney.  Having loads of American friends living in Sydney has also helped my relationship with these stores flourish, not to mention US business trips with some side shopping.   So I have a long relationship with this brand.

I won’t begin to tell you the list of things I have bought over the years but highlights Continue Reading →

Auctions Sydney | Office fit out

42-48 John Street, Leichhardt

With a very small budget and a mission to deck out 300 square metres of office space I enlisted the help of Raffan Kelaher & Thomas auctioneers in Leichhardt, Sydney.    These are my local go to auction friends they have been around for years. While probably not as cheap as they used to be I always include them on my list along with ebay, gum tree and Mitchell rd Auctions when I am trying to source a load of items at once. I don’t usually give up – this time I did.  After trying to get a reservation without success I left Paris without experiencing Frenchie.  Sob sob…..I am told by my bevvy of local sources that it’s a true gem.  See for yourself  here.  I seriously watched the video 3 times in a row – it made my heart sing  but I wept when there was no table empty.  Please bear witness that I will update this post one day soon,  I am sure of that.

Bonpoint, Paris

6 Rue de Tourno

This high end Children’s clothing brand is another delight from Paris.  Enter the store and you can get lost – not only in the stunning clothing lines but in the store itself – it is huge plus there is a stunning cafe out the back.  If you are not made of money you can actually  find something delightful to purchase.   I found the branded baby brushes, a bicycle brooch for a buy, and a great scarf all around 20 euros.  Not a bad gift for the kids without breaking the bank.

It is worth making a purchase to watch Continue Reading →

Kooka Burra Cafe, Paris

62 Rue des Martyrs 75009 Paris, France

I’ll admit: I will travel far and wide in search of a great coffee. Going to Kooka Burra was not only a great coffee experience (thank you guys!) but also a fabulous opportunity to meander the Rue De Martrys, which felt suprisingly like home. Families, fruit stores, boutiques etc one of which had the exact bag I had picked up at a wholesalers the day before, so I knew it was my type of area.

French tableware | Jean Vier, Paris

French tableware at its best.  The ultimate is the French linen in the oil cloth. It is so soft and so worth the little bit extra of cash to get the real deal.  The range is excellent and the service was outstanding. The store owner and I chatted for a long time and was given a stunning saucer as a lovely gift.  This store is not far from Place De la Madeline. Oh I Continue Reading →

Hotel Du Nord, Paris

102 Quai de Jemmapes,  Paris

Another fabulous lunch or Dinner spot recommended by a local friend who has lived in Paris over for 8 years.   It was sadly missed this year, so onto my list for next visit this goes.

My trusted friend tells me it is hip yet relaxed and a great place for a catch up or fun night after a long day in Paris. If your love the sound of this, go see about visiting Hotel du Nord yourself,  located in the 10th near other favourites Les Deux Singes and Fuxia – if you can’t get a table at Du Nord.

Clothing bargains, Rue De Alesia, Paris

Its a little hit and miss but  I still recommend a trip to the 14th arrondisonment for some outlet shopping .  Catch the metro to Alesia and wander in and around the Rue de Alesia.  Brands include Repetto Shoes,  Cacharel, Sonia Rykel and Chevrolet,  a popular french brand for leather jackets.  To compliment the stores there are food markets along Rue de Aleisa selling  loads of yummy stuff but the best of them all was this Nougat stall.   I will let the pic speak for itself. Bazar de l’Hôtel de Ville

This Paris department store is defiantly worth a stop .  All the usually stuff will grab your attention and it’s just so fun to browse,  I seriously even enjoy the signage  – but of course I loved the floor with loads of arts and craft.  Searched for sale items I came away very pleased with the sorts of things that cost a bomb at home such as pointed crayons for kids (3 euros) and very cute notebooks for great gifts.  Even if you think it is just another department store look deeper and you will find treasures.   This is the store where I discovered Hakie handbags, not French ( shhh spanish) but worth talking about.   I also picked up few bargain cardys in the fashion section. Probably design wise not too different to some at home but so much better cause it’s from Paris – do you know that kind of shopping justification ?

Also it rumoured that spring 2013 will see a new edition of the tableware section – definately worth seeing that.

Organic heaven at Rose Bakery, Paris

30 Rue Debelleyme

While wandering the marvelous Marais I found this great lunch spot. The presentation is amazing and food is totally Organic with loads of options.   I found out it was set up by and English woman and her French husband, firstly in London now 3 locations in Paris.  Service, and food excellent but there is usually a wait for a table so go early if around lunch time. Bonton, Paris

Merchandising at its best with a  product range worthy of such effort . Bonton holds an amazing kids range of  clothing, toys, gifts, design pieces, textiles and furniture.  It takes at least half an hour just to walk through the store. When I have visited Paris I have a rule that I should do at least one cultural experience each day – The day of a Bonton visit is easy as this store trumps for it is even better that alot of museums.  Plus There are  3 outlets so you can not miss it.  See for yourself Continue Reading →

Papier Plus, Paris

9 Rue du Pont Louis-Philippe

My Love affair with Stationary continues inside this stunning modern Parisian stationary store.  The exterior is just as stunning as the merchandise inside. The papers are amazing  in fact all product is  exquisite and if I had more space I would have got into serious trouble.  There are so many stores to visit around the Village st Paul area so make sure to allow a few good hours.   Of  course you can not miss the stunning Petit Pan right around the corner.   Get ready for an afternoon of visual bliss.

15 rue des Martyrs

As I mentioned earlier, the Ru Due Martyrs reminds me in many ways of my home in Rozelle, Sydney. Heaps of fabulous shops from Fruit and veggies, buzzing cafes to various indie retail stores. Wandering down the hills, wishing for more time to experience the community a little deeper, I hit another reason to note a return visit to the Martyrs. Talk about feeling like a kid in a candy store.  I was in a candy store but with no kids as the cover for my purchases.  Could I really insinuate Continue Reading →

Astier de Villatt, Paris

Ok, this is famous in my books !  Astier de Villatt is a wonderful store with exquisite pieces of ceramics. The merchandise is not cheap but absolutely worth visit, there are load of smaller items to purchase. Note if not in Paris anytime soon  you can see their concept store inside ABC Carpet and Homes in NYC.

Chez Moustache I Fabulous Paris restaurant

4 rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud

Chez Moustache Restaurant is a super cool, really easy dinning experience. The decor rocks my world, I love the exposed stone walls and the menu is simple and easy to match with a few drinks.  I’m suspecting  you could opt to skip dinner to enjoy cocktails at the bar. Luckily I always feel blessed to be dining with friends who speak French, making clear any menu ambiguity. (for the record mine is appalling).  If you choose a lunch visit then add it to a day when hanging in Marais area, as it’s not far away. Continue Reading →

I’ve loved wall paper all my life.  As a kid we would all help mum redecorate room by room during the school holiday.  I loved choosing it – visualising it on the wall, the feeling of it and the sheer joy or tearing old wall paper down from the walls!

Now each time I go to NYC I get to bask in wallpaper delights for hours.  This showroom  is like no other. The range is incredible and it is all retro. They are so so helpful and fun to chat with.
